Women Build 2011

Passion comes in many shapes, sizes and genders. The Women Build team of Habitat for Humanity Wellington County is the truest example.
HFHWC’s Women Build team formed in the summer of 2009 with expectations to build in 2010. They committed to hosting several fundraising efforts to help support their summer build at 439 York Rd. Their passion for the Habitat cause and the women-empowering initiative seeped through the core of their fundraising endeavours throughout the winter and spring of 2010. When the summer rolled around and Women Build was ready to start their inaugural project, the unthinkable happened. Issues struck the 439 York Rd. lot they had expected to build on. This forced Habitat Wellington County to find a new lot for the inaugural Women Build. This was a huge blow to the team. However, it was a small hurdle to overcome; in fact, it gave the team more motivation and incentive.
Women Build trumpeted the HFHWC Women Build motto throughout the summer, “We’d rather build it than clean it”. They applied this motto to the Skills Week event that featured Michael Sarracini and HGTV Income Property Host, Scott McGillivray. This week of learning and practicing construction skills primed the women for the building project they knew was inevitable.
Inevitable became reality, late in the summer of 2010; Women Build 2010 began construction in September at 133 Bagot St. alongside the Bird Elinesky Corporate Build. Throughout the building process, the women learned, laughed and constructed as a team. While they had to wait an extra few months and relocate to a different build-site, they were eventually able to reward Heather Blair and her two children with a new home and a new start.
Eighteen months after the birth of HFHWC Women Build, the initiative and team has come full-circle. Now under the direction of the Chair, Lynda Slater, Women Build 2011 WILL start building at their initial 439 York Rd. lot in June. Similar to 2010, the 2011 team has already hosted fundraising events and will be hosting more fundraising events leading up to and through their summer building dates. Passion still remains at the core of HFHWC Women Build.
